Grooming

How often you will need to groom your rabbit will depend on what breed he/she is. Rabbits, like cats, groom themselves, so they can do a large part of the grooming process on their own (see below video). With most rabbits, you will only need to groom them when they are in a moult.

  • Breeds with long wooled fur (such as Angora and Jersey Wooly) will need grooming once a week to once a fortnight.
  • Long-haired rabbits with a naturally matt-free coat (such as Cashmere Lop and Swiss Fox) will generally only need grooming once in a while, or when they are in a moult, depending on the coat quality.
  • Short haired rabbits (such as Mini Lop and Netherland Dwarf) will normally need grooming when they are in a moult, and the same goes for rex coated rabbits (such as Rex, Mini Rex, and Plush Lop).

Below are the grooming tools that I use for my rabbits. The flea comb (top) helps to tidy up the coat and remove matts and bits of wood shavings, hay, etc. from the coat. The slicker brush (bottom) is used for removing dead hair from the topcoat and undercoat.

Here is a video demonstrating the correct technique of using a slicker brush to remove dead hairs from the undercoat and topcoat:
